EU ETS2 Expansion Set to Raise European Logistics Costs by 15%

New emissions trading rules for road transport will add significant costs to supply chain operations across the continent.

EU ETS2 Expansion Set to Raise European Logistics Costs by 15%

The European Union's expansion of its Emissions Trading System (ETS2) to road transport and buildings will significantly raise logistics and heating costs in Europe, pushing companies to integrate carbon price modeling into their financial performance.

Analysts expect carbon prices near €45 to €50 per ton of CO₂, which would add 10 to 15 eurocents per liter to fuel costs. For logistics operators, this translates to approximately 15% higher operating costs.

"Companies need to start planning now for this transition," said a senior analyst at a major consulting firm. "Those who invest in electric vehicles and alternative fuels will be better positioned to manage these costs."

The new rules are expected to take effect in 2027, giving operators time to adjust their fleets and operations.
